Well, I'll be the first to appear stupid while installing it!

I got a stupid question that I should know the answer to, but I'm blanking.  I configed and installed 2.4.0, modules and all,
and now depmod (v2.4.0) reports that all of the modules have unresolved symbols, stuff that appears to be kernel stuff (like
printk).  wtf?
