| [Cialug] Re: DSL and Linux |
Efficient networks does have Linux products. Check out www.efficient.com/products/ Avoid USB dsl modems with Linux and use those which connect to the ethernet card. Of the list provided by Iowatelecom of recommended dsl modems, it would pay you greatly to go to each company's web site and read the product info blurb, and even send an e-mail to that company's technical support department and ask if they now if it will work under Linux. Suffice it to say, when I had AT&T cable service, I didn't ask if the cable modem would work under Linux - I asked if the cable modem was external and would connect to an ethernet card. Most USB dsl modems require some kind of driver under Windows - those won't work with Linux unless the company states Linux in the System requirements of the product. The 3Com duallink modem, and others of the same type, should be avoided simply because the modem has to be configured for either USB, or ethernet - at this time I am not aware that simply plugging it in to an ethernet card will force the modem to use just ethernet. Other types of dsl modems to avoid are those labeled as dsl routers - ones with a 4port hub as part of the unit. The 3Com 840 does have switches on the back to force predetermined modes such as Bridged mode and it has a web based GUI configuration. I have not tested this model out on Linux yet but hope to do so in the near future. This type of dsl unit will do NAT and has a dhcp server included. Just a couple of things you don't actually need with Linux. If you need future help, I can provide it in the way of product information - just pick whatever dsl modem you decide on and ask me about it.
