I started C with the book _The C Primer Plus_ by Stephen Prata (I think) It's put out by The Waite Group. It's clearly written, puts emphasis on style, and the examples are correct. It's not a high power book, but then, that's not what you're looking for right now. Once you've gotten comfortable with that (ie. you know all of the control structures of the language, you know how to use functions, and strings and pointers aren't giving you too much hell), you should start reading _The C Programming Language_ by Kernighan and Ritchie.
