Normally, with DHCP, you don't assign more than 1 IP to that ethernet interface because the IP lease is based upon the MAC address so the DHCP server would get confused. Typically, you're either assigning multiple ip's to 1 interface (eth0, eth0:1, eth0:2 etc) or you're using DHCP to assign 1 ip to the eth0 interface. I suppose that you could use dhcp to assign an address to eth0 and setup statics on eth0:1 and so forth! -Tom -----Original Message----- From: lug-admins@cialug.org [mailto:lug-admins@cialug.org]On Behalf Of c0w[z] Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 3:40 PM To: lug@cialug.org Subject: [Cialug] Re: Mediacom Ok for all of you n00b's mediacoms (just like a lot of other ISPs) DHCP assigns IPs by MAC address. And if you didn't know (as far as I know) all network cards have different MAC addresses (this includes the little linksys firewall) so whenever you plug a different computer into your cable modem it'll give you a diff IP. Oh and on a similar note, how do shell providers have so many IPs for 1 machine?????? The reason I ask is because I was wondering if its possible to do that with mediacom???? If anyone knows or wants to try to figure it out, let me know. c0w[z] -----Original Message----- From: lug-admins@cialug.org [mailto:lug-admins@cialug.org] On Behalf Of Nick Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 11:30 AM To: lug@cialug.org Subject: [Cialug] Re: Mediacom Mine changed when I took my PC off drom behind the Linksys Router. It changed again when I put another PC right into the cable modem. The IP then went back when I plugged in the Router. Lesson Learned: Mediacom's DHCP service isn't random. Unless someone hijacks your IP when you're not using it... Your IP will not change. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Hala" <dave@58ghz.net> To: <lug@cialug.org> Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 9:28 AM Subject: [Cialug] Re: Mediacom > Mine haven't changed for months.... > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Cesar Mendoza" <mendoza@kitiara.org> > To: <lug@cialug.org> > Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 9:20 AM > Subject: [Cialug] Mediacom > > > > Hi, > > > > Since Mediacom uses dhcp to distrubute the ips, how often does the ip > > change? > > > > Bye > > Cesar Mendoza > > http://www.kitiara.org > > -- > > "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." > > --Isaac Newton > > -------------------------------------------------- > > To un-subscribe to this list use the link below: > > > > mailto:listar@cialug.org?subject=unsubscribe%20lug > > > -------------------------------------------------- > To un-subscribe to this list use the link below: > > mailto:listar@cialug.org?subject=unsubscribe%20lug > > -------------------------------------------------- To un-subscribe to this list use the link below: mailto:listar@cialug.org?subject=unsubscribe%20lug -------------------------------------------------- To un-subscribe to this list use the link below: mailto:listar@cialug.org?subject=unsubscribe%20lug -------------------------------------------------- To un-subscribe to this list use the link below: mailto:listar@cialug.org?subject=unsubscribe%20lug
