OK, you may have gotten the answer you were looking for, but I just can't
help myself, I love to use this program so much:

screen

ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/utilities/screen

It also allows you to switch, and is very, very flexible, and especially
good for logging on as different users to remote machines, or if you want to
detach from a session for a while. It beats the pants off shell-level job
control. I'll still use virtual terminals when I'm at the console, but I
spend over 90% of my time at a computer in one screen session or another.

The name is sort of generic, so its hard to google, which is why I provided
the link to the original ftp site. That link should be good if you're
running one of those "build everything myself" distros. If you are running
a distro with reasonable package management and binary packages, you should
be able to find a suitable binary package for screen at the usual places.

As the tail end of the screen man page says:

A weird imagination is most useful to gain full advan-
          tage of all the features.

Send bug-reports, fixes, enhancements, t-shirts, money,
          beer & pizza to screen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

PS: For readers in AAFUGIT land--I'd be happy to give a short demo during a
meeting of how to use screen.
